The department maintains the Adoption Archive, a cross-indexed record of adoptions granted in Minnesota since 1856. The archive contains information on adopted children, birth and adoptive parents, adopted siblings and the court granting the adoption. County social service agencies, private adoption agencies and courts send documents pertaining to each adoption to the department. Information from the Adoption Archive is available upon request by writing to Sandy LeMire, Department of Human Services, Family and Children's Services, 444 Lafayette Rd, St Paul, MN 55144-3831 (651) 296-2795. The request must be signed and include the following information:

Adopted adult's

1. Full name
2. Birth date
3. Adoptive parents full names
4. Return address
5. Phone number

Or Birth Mother's:

1. Full name at time of birth
2. Child's birth date or approximate birth date
3. Return address
4. Phone number

Department staff work with people affected by adoption, county and private social service agencies, the Minnesota Legislature and other service providers to provide a comprehensive umbrella of legal protections, social and medical services.
